Why visit Da Nang
Da Nang sits halfway along Vietnam's coast, between the Hai Van Pass to the north and Hoi An to the south. The city is easy to get around, with wide riverside promenades, good seafood restaurants and My Khe Beach running along its eastern edge. It works well as a base for a few days of day trips, or as the first stop before heading on to Hoi An and Hue.
Top things to do in Da Nang
- Marble Mountains: five limestone hills south of the city, with caves, shrines and pagodas reached by stone steps and views over the coast from the top.
- Son Tra Peninsula: a forested headland where Linh Ung Pagoda and its tall white Lady Buddha statue look back over the bay. With luck you may spot red-shanked douc langurs in the trees.
- Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge: a long cable car ride up to a cooler hilltop resort, where the Golden Bridge is held up by two giant stone hands.
- Hai Van Pass: the coastal mountain road towards Hue, with sea views, old fortifications at the summit and a popular route for jeep or motorbike rides.
- The Han River at night: the bridges are lit up after dark, and the Dragon Bridge breathes fire and water on weekend evenings. The riverside is a pleasant spot for dinner.
Best time to visit
The dry season runs roughly from February to August. February to April is warm and comfortable for sightseeing, while June to August is hot and the best time for the beach. From September to December the city gets heavy rain and the occasional typhoon, which can disrupt sea trips and cloud over the mountain views.
Getting there
Da Nang International Airport is about 10 minutes from the city centre, and flights from Hanoi take around 1 hour 20 minutes. There are also direct flights from Ho Chi Minh City and several other Asian cities. Hoi An is about 45 minutes away by road, and Hue around 2.5 to 3 hours via the Hai Van tunnel or the pass.
