Why visit Indochina
A multi-country trip makes the most of a long flight from Europe, the UK, the US or Australia. The four countries sit close together and are well connected by air, so in two to four weeks you can move from Vietnam's mountains and coast to Cambodia's ancient temples, the quiet Buddhist towns of Laos and Thailand's busy capital. Each border brings a change of language, cuisine and pace, while the Mekong River ties much of the region together.
Top things to do in Indochina
- Vietnam: Hanoi's Old Quarter, an overnight cruise on Ha Long Bay, Hoi An's old town and the waterways of the Mekong Delta.
- Angkor, Cambodia: watch sunrise at Angkor Wat and explore the Bayon and Ta Prohm temples near Siem Reap.
- Phnom Penh, Cambodia: visit the Royal Palace and the riverside, and learn about the country's recent history at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum.
- Luang Prabang, Laos: a UNESCO-listed town of temples and French-era houses where the Nam Khan meets the Mekong.
- Bangkok and Chiang Mai, Thailand: temples, canals and food markets in the capital, then old city walls, night markets and hill country in the north.
Best time to visit
For most Indochina routes the best months are November to March, when the dry season brings sunshine to Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and southern Vietnam. North Vietnam is cool from December to February. March to May is very hot in Cambodia and Thailand, often above 35°C. From about May to October the monsoon brings heavy rain across much of the region. Central Vietnam is the exception, with its wettest months from September to December.
Getting there
Most Indochina trips start in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Bangkok. Short flights, mostly 1 to 2 hours, connect Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City with Luang Prabang, Vientiane, Siem Reap, Phnom Penh and Bangkok. Hanoi to Luang Prabang or Vientiane takes about 1 hour. From Ho Chi Minh City you can also travel overland to Phnom Penh in about 6 to 7 hours. Entry rules differ for each country, so check visa requirements for your nationality before booking.
