Why visit Phu Quoc
Phu Quoc is where many travellers choose to spend a few days resting at the end of a Vietnam trip. The west coast faces the sunset, the south is dotted with small islands, and inland there are pepper gardens, forest and quiet roads. The island is also known for its fish sauce and pearl farms, and for the seafood served at its night markets and harbour restaurants.
Top things to do in Phu Quoc
- An Thoi islands by boat: spend a day around the small islands off the southern tip, swimming and snorkelling in clear water with a seafood lunch on board or on the beach.
- Sao Beach: a stretch of white sand and calm, shallow water on the southeast coast, good for an easy swim.
- Pepper farms and fish sauce: see pepper vines growing on tall poles, then visit a traditional workshop where anchovies ferment with salt in large wooden barrels.
- Hon Thom cable car: a long cable car ride from the south of the island over the sea to Hon Thom, with views over fishing boats and islands.
- Ham Ninh fishing village: a small village on the east coast with houses on stilts, known for crab and other fresh seafood.
- Duong Dong night market: stroll the stalls in the main town for grilled seafood, local snacks and souvenirs.
Best time to visit
The dry season runs from about November to April, bringing sunny skies, calm seas on the west coast and the best conditions for boat trips and snorkelling. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings rain and rougher water on the west side, and some boat trips run less often, though there are still sunny spells and fewer visitors.
Getting there
Phu Quoc International Airport has direct flights from Ho Chi Minh City, taking about 1 hour, and from Hanoi, taking about 2 hours, as well as some international routes. Ferries and fast boats also run from Rach Gia and Ha Tien on the mainland. Most of the main beaches are under an hour's drive from the airport.
