Travel times between each stop
This route covers a fair amount of road, so it helps to know roughly how long each leg takes:
- Hanoi to Mai Chau: about 3.5 hours, including the climb over Thung Khe pass before the road drops into the Mai Chau valley.
- Mai Chau to Pu Luong: around 1.5 to 2 hours on smaller, winding mountain roads.
- Pu Luong to Ninh Binh: roughly 3 hours, as the road leaves the hills for the flat delta.
- Ninh Binh to Hanoi: about 2 hours, mostly on the expressway.
Times depend on traffic, road works and how often you stop for photos, so treat them as a guide.
Practical tips for this route
- Pack a small overnight bag. You change beds twice, and some homestays in Pu Luong involve steps or a short walk from the road. A daypack plus a soft bag is easier to handle than a large suitcase.
- Bring cash for Pu Luong. ATMs are rare in the villages, so withdraw what you need in Hanoi or Mai Chau before heading further into the hills.
- Pace day 2. It is the most active day of the trip. If you prefer a gentler rhythm, choose a shorter trek and spend more time at the water wheels or on the raft.
- Bring swimwear and sandals if you plan to visit Hieu waterfall, and a torch for Bat Cave.
- Time Hang Mua well. The climb is several hundred stone steps. Early morning or late afternoon is cooler and better for photos than midday.
- Prepare for winding roads. If you are prone to motion sickness, bring tablets for the drive between Mai Chau and Pu Luong.
Where to stay each night
- Nights 1 and 2, Pu Luong: Choose between a stilt-house homestay with a local family or an eco-lodge with private bungalows facing the terraces. Two nights in the same place means less packing and unpacking in the middle of the trip.
- Night 3, Ninh Binh: Tam Coc is the most convenient base, with small family-run guesthouses and bungalows among the rice fields and limestone peaks, close to Trang An and Hang Mua. Ninh Binh city has larger hotels if you prefer more facilities.
If you would like a night in Mai Chau itself, the valley has its own homestays in Thai stilt houses. Adding that night turns this into a five-day trip.
Ways to adjust the itinerary
Five days at a slower pace
Sleep in Mai Chau on the first night, then continue to Pu Luong on day 2. The drives get shorter, and you have time to cycle around the Mai Chau valley without watching the clock.
Running it in reverse
Starting in Ninh Binh and finishing in Mai Chau works just as well. It can suit travellers who land in Hanoi the night before, since the first drive is the shortest.
Adding Ha Long Bay
Ha Long is about 2.5 hours from Hanoi in a different direction, so the simplest approach is to add an overnight cruise before or after this loop. Direct transfers from Ninh Binh to Ha Long are possible, but plan for a long day on the road.
When to do this trip
The route works all year, and the rice fields add a lot to the scenery. In Mai Chau and Pu Luong the terraces are usually green in April and May and again in August, and turn golden around late May to early June and from mid-September to early October. Ninh Binh’s fields follow a broadly similar calendar. Autumn is generally dry and pleasant, summer is hot with heavy afternoon showers, and winter from December to February is cool and often misty in the mountains, so pack a warm layer for the nights in Pu Luong.
FAQ
Is four days enough for Mai Chau, Pu Luong and Ninh Binh?
Yes, for a first taste of all three. You will spend a fair amount of time on the road, so if you want longer treks or a relaxed pace, five or six days is more comfortable.
How hard are the treks in Pu Luong?
Most village treks are moderate, with some climbs on stone steps and dirt paths through the terraces. Routes can be shortened or swapped for easier walks, and the standard routes need no trekking experience.
Is this itinerary suitable for older travellers or families?
Generally yes. Walks can be adapted, the raft and boat trips are gentle, and an eco-lodge with private bathrooms is easier than a shared homestay. Hang Mua is the steepest part of the trip and can be skipped.
Can I do this trip by public transport?
Buses connect Hanoi with Mai Chau and with Ninh Binh, but links into Pu Luong and between the three areas are limited. A private car with a driver is the practical choice for a four-day loop.
