More to see in Da Nang

These sights fit easily around the beach and the day trips above.

Son Tra Peninsula

The forested peninsula at the northern end of the beach is the city’s largest green space. A winding road climbs to viewpoints over the bay, and Linh Ung Pagoda has a tall white statue of the Lady Buddha looking out to sea. The forest is also home to the red-shanked douc, an endangered and very colourful primate. Go early in the morning for the clearest views and the best chance of spotting them.

Museum of Cham Sculpture

Near the western end of the Dragon Bridge, this museum displays sandstone carvings from the Cham kingdom that once ruled this coast. An hour here gives useful background before visiting My Son or other Cham sites, and it is a good choice for a hot afternoon or a rainy day.

Han Market and Con Market

Han Market, close to the riverfront, is the easiest place to browse dried goods, coffee and local snacks. Con Market is larger and more local, with busy food stalls where you can try several dishes in one sitting.

Hai Van Pass

North of the city, the old road over the Hai Van Pass climbs through forest with wide views of the coastline. Most through traffic now uses the tunnel, which leaves the pass road quieter for sightseeing. A half-day round trip from Da Nang works well, or you can cross the pass on the way to Hue.

More local dishes to try

  • Bun cha ca: rice noodle soup with fish cakes, a typical Da Nang breakfast.
  • Banh trang cuon thit heo: thin slices of boiled pork rolled in rice paper with fresh herbs, served with a fermented anchovy dipping sauce.
  • Seafood by weight: at the beachside seafood restaurants you choose live fish, clams or prawns from the tanks and pay by weight. Confirm the price per kilo and the cooking style before the kitchen starts.
  • Coffee: the city has a strong café culture, from plastic stools on the pavement to riverside terraces. Try ca phe sua da, iced coffee with condensed milk.

Getting there and getting around

Direct flights from Hanoi to Da Nang take about 1 hour 20 minutes, and there are frequent flights from Ho Chi Minh City as well. The airport sits within the city, so the drive to most beachfront hotels is short, usually well under half an hour outside rush hour.

In town, ride-hailing apps and metered taxis are the simplest way to get around. Renting a scooter is common, but you need a licence that is valid in Vietnam and suitable travel insurance, and traffic can be heavy. For Ba Na Hills, Son Tra or the Hai Van Pass, a private car with driver saves time and stress.

Where to stay

  • Along My Khe and the beachfront: the most popular area, with everything from simple guesthouses to high-rise hotels. Good for beach mornings and seafood dinners.
  • Near the Han River: the city centre side, close to the Dragon Bridge, the markets and the museum. Handy for evening walks and short airport transfers.
  • Son Tra Peninsula: secluded resorts on the hillside, best if you want quiet and do not mind a drive into the city.
  • South towards Non Nuoc: large beach resorts on the coast south of the city, a good choice for families who plan to spend much of the day by the pool and the sea.

Beach safety and seasonal tips

  • Swim near lifeguard stations and within the flagged areas. Currents can be strong, especially from around September to December when the waves are bigger.
  • Between roughly April and August the sea is usually at its calmest and clearest.
  • Swim early or late in the day, as locals do. The midday sun is intense.
  • Typhoons can affect this coast between roughly September and December. Keep an eye on forecasts and leave some flexibility in your plans if you travel then.

FAQ

Is Da Nang good for families?

Yes. The beaches are long and sandy, accommodation ranges from apartments to resorts with pools, and outings such as Ba Na Hills appeal to children. Short distances keep transfers easy.

How far is the airport from the beach?

Da Nang airport is inside the city, so most beachfront hotels are a short drive away, which makes Da Nang an easy first or last stop in Vietnam.

Is Da Nang worth visiting in the rainy season?

It can be, especially if you are flexible. Crowds are usually smaller, and indoor sights like the Museum of Cham Sculpture and the markets still work well. Expect rough seas on some days and possible disruption from storms, mainly in October and November.

How much time should I set aside for Ba Na Hills?

Plan a full day, or at least most of one. The drive from the city takes under an hour each way, and the cable car, Golden Bridge and gardens take several hours to see without rushing.
