How to get there
Most visitors travel from Hanoi by road. The expressway via Hai Phong has brought the journey down to around 2.5 hours, although traffic leaving Hanoi and a rest stop on the way can stretch it to three. Many cruise operators include a shuttle bus or limousine van that collects passengers from hotels in the Old Quarter in the morning and drops them back the following afternoon.
Where you board depends on your cruise. Many boats leave from Tuan Chau Island or the international cruise port at Bai Chay, both on the Ha Long side. Cruises into Lan Ha Bay often depart from the Hai Phong side or from Cat Ba Island. If you are arranging a private transfer, confirm the exact pier so your driver goes to the right place.
Choosing your area of the bay
The name Ha Long Bay is often used for a wider stretch of limestone seascape, and the route your boat follows shapes the whole trip.
- Central Ha Long Bay is the classic route, with Sung Sot Cave, the viewpoint and small beach on Ti Top Island, and the kayaking area around Luon Cave. It is also the busiest part of the bay, especially from late morning.
- Bai Tu Long Bay lies to the northeast. The scenery is similar, there are fewer boats, and routes often include a visit to the fishing village of Vung Vieng.
- Lan Ha Bay sits to the south near Cat Ba Island. It has small sandy coves and sheltered water for kayaking, and pairs well with a night or two on Cat Ba.
If you would rather avoid crowds, ask about Bai Tu Long or Lan Ha.
Practical tips for your cruise
- Bring your passport. Boats register passenger details with the port authority before departure, so you will need your passport information at check-in.
- Watch the weather in summer. The storm season runs roughly from June to October. When a storm warning is issued, the authorities can suspend all sailings, sometimes at short notice. Leave a spare day in your plans if you travel in these months, and ask your operator how they handle cancelled cruises.
- Expect mist in winter. From December to March the bay is often grey and cool, with soft light that suits photography. Pack a light jacket for evenings on deck.
- Check what is included. Meals and the main activities are usually covered on overnight cruises, while drinks, spa treatments and some optional excursions are often extra. Carry some Vietnamese dong for small purchases and tips.
- Prepare for steps. Sung Sot Cave and the Ti Top viewpoint both involve a fair number of stairs. Travellers with limited mobility can stay on board or choose a route with gentler stops.
- Pack for the water. A dry bag for your phone, quick-drying clothes and sandals that can get wet make kayaking far more comfortable.
Day cruise or overnight?
A day cruise from Hanoi is possible, with roughly five hours on the road and four to six hours on the water. It suits travellers who are short on time and are happy with a long day. An overnight cruise gives you a slower pace, time on deck in the evening and early morning, and a chance to kayak once the day boats have headed back to port.
Where to stay
For most people, the cruise cabin is the accommodation. Cabins range from compact rooms with a window to larger suites with a private balcony, so compare layouts as well as itineraries. Families should ask about connecting cabins or rooms that can take an extra bed.
If you prefer to sleep on land, Bai Chay has a wide choice of hotels and is convenient for day cruises. Tuan Chau has resort-style properties close to the main pier. Cat Ba Island has guesthouses and small hotels and works well as a base for Lan Ha Bay, with cycling and walking in Cat Ba National Park nearby.
FAQ
Will I get seasick?
The bay is sheltered by its islands, so the water is usually calm and seasickness is uncommon. If you are sensitive to motion, ask for a cabin on a lower deck near the middle of the boat and bring your usual remedy.
Is a cruise suitable for children and older travellers?
Generally, yes. Many boats welcome children, and any activity can be skipped if it feels too tiring. Let your operator know about mobility needs in advance, since boarding often involves a small transfer boat and some stops have steep stairs.
What happens if my cruise is cancelled because of the weather?
Sailing bans are decided by the local authorities for safety reasons. Operators usually offer a new date or a refund, but terms differ, so read the cancellation policy before you pay.
Can I go straight from Ha Long Bay to Ninh Binh?
Yes. With a private car the drive usually takes around four hours, so you do not need to return to Hanoi first. This works well if you want to see both areas in one loop.
