How to get to Hoi An for the day

Most day trips start from Da Nang, about 45 minutes away by road. A private car with driver is the most flexible option, as the driver can bring you back whenever you are ready. Ride-hailing apps and taxis work well for one-way trips, and some Da Nang hotels run shuttle buses at set times.

From Hue, Hoi An is roughly 3 to 3.5 hours each way by road, which makes a single day very long. If you are coming from Hue, consider spending at least one night in Hoi An instead.

Cars cannot enter the central lanes of the old town, so drivers drop visitors at the edge. Agree on a pick-up point and time with your driver before you set off on foot.

A simple plan for the day

Arriving in the early afternoon and staying into the evening works well, as the tips above suggest. Here is one way to structure it:

  1. Around 2 pm: arrive, buy your old town ticket and start at the Japanese Covered Bridge at the western end of Tran Phu Street.
  2. 2.30 to 4 pm: walk east along Tran Phu and the parallel Nguyen Thai Hoc Street. Step into an old merchant house such as Tan Ky House, and one of the Chinese assembly halls, such as the Fujian Assembly Hall with its courtyards and hanging incense coils.
  3. 4 to 5 pm: browse the Central Market near the river, then rest in a café with an upstairs view over the tiled rooftops.
  4. 5 to 6.30 pm: cross the bridge to An Hoi islet as the lanterns come on, and take your boat ride at dusk.
  5. From 6.30 pm: dinner in the old town, then a final walk through the lit streets before heading back.

Understanding the old town ticket

Foreign visitors need a ticket to enter Hoi An’s old town. It is sold at booths on the main approaches and includes entry to a set number of heritage sites, such as old houses, assembly halls and small museums. In one day, pick the two or three places that interest you most and enjoy the streets in between. Keep the ticket with you, as staff may ask to see it.

Add a countryside morning

If you can arrive in the morning, the quieter hours before lunch are well spent outside the old town:

  • Tra Que vegetable village: a few kilometres north of the centre, where families grow the herbs and greens that go into Hoi An’s dishes. Some farms offer short cooking or gardening sessions.
  • Cam Thanh coconut forest: a short drive east, where local boatmen paddle round bamboo basket boats along channels lined with water coconut palms. It is lively and fun, especially for families.
  • An Bang beach: around 15 minutes by car from the old town, with casual seafood restaurants for a relaxed lunch.

Head into the old town once the midday heat has eased, and follow the afternoon plan above.

Practical tips

  • Dress for temples and assembly halls. Covering shoulders and knees is respectful when you enter places of worship.
  • Bring cash in small notes. Street food stalls, boat rides and market vendors usually prefer cash.
  • Allow time for tailoring. Some shops can finish simple items quickly, but a good fit usually needs at least one fitting. On a day trip, order early in the afternoon, tell the tailor exactly when you are leaving, and ask whether they can deliver to your hotel in Da Nang if needed.
  • Check the lunar calendar. On the 14th day of each lunar month, the old town holds a full moon evening with extra lanterns and traditional performances. It is busier than usual and very atmospheric.
  • Watch the weather. From around October to November, heavy rain can flood the riverside streets for a day or two. Boat rides may stop, so check conditions before you travel.

Do I need a ticket to enter Hoi An old town?

Yes. Foreign visitors buy an old town ticket, which also covers entry to a selection of heritage sites. Tickets are sold at booths around the edge of the old town.

How do I get back to Da Nang after dark?

The simplest option is a private car booked in advance with a fixed pick-up time. Ride-hailing apps and taxis also run in the evening, though finding one can take longer when the old town is busy.
